POSITIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH CIVIL SOCIETY AND MOVING AHEAD WITH ELECTIONS FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The Coalition for Good Governance (CGG), an informal grouping of 55 civil society organisations (CSOs), thanks the State Government of Selangor for the meeting with the Menteri Besar of Selangor (MB) on 16 April 2008.
At this meeting, the MB agreed to the setting up of task forces comprising representatives from government agencies and CSOs. These task forces will work on key areas of concern e.g. freedom of information, women and the urban poor. The CGG is already pro-actively working towards the establishment of these task forces within the period of 3 months as advised by the MB.
The CGG notes the MB’s keen interest to introduce the Freedom of Information Bill as proposed by CSOs and his positive response to the setting up of an independent Ombudsman’s Office for Good Governance in Selangor. The CGG views this as a good start to the cooperation between the Selangor State Government and CSOs. Finally, CGG is also encouraged that the MB has agreed to regular meetings so that the dialogue between the Selangor State Government and CSOs can continue. The MB has agreed to meet with CGG again in three months time. In this regard, the Selangor State Government leads the way for all other state governments to follow.

ACA to be independent body: A wise move or another propaganda?
ACA to be fully independent
Apr 21, 08 10:32am
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badwi today continued with his reform agenda by announcing that the Anti-Corruption Agency will become a fully independent body.
He also announced other reforms today to boost the fight against corruption, including passing new laws to protect whistleblowers.
In addition, the number of ACA officers would be tripled in the next five years to boost the agency capacity to fight corruption.
The moves came days after Abdullah announced setting up an independent panel to help appoint judges in senior positions. At present, they are appointed solely by the prime minister.
The judicial institution and the ACA have come under severe pressure in recent years over the government’s interference in both bodies.
The civil society has for many years pressed for an truly independent ACA.
Youth are less likely to mix with other ethnic
Since last meeting with Menteri Besar Selangor Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim regarding working paper proposed by CGG (Coalition for Good Governance) Wednesday ago, we have another youth survey launching by CPPS and National Young Lawyers Committee (NYLC).

Launch of the MINDA MUDA Research Study
Kuala Lumpur, 18th April 2008; The Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute and the National Young Lawyers’ Committee (NYLC) of the Bar Council will be launching its MINDA MUDA Research Study on Young Malaysians and National Unity.
The study, conducted between July and August 2007, covered 1000 young Malaysians aged between 18 and 35 in Peninsular Malaysia. It found that young Malaysians were generally optimistic about the state of national unity in the country; however there exist disturbing trends that must be urgently addressed to avoid further racial polarization.
Results also showed that there were significant differences in responses between urban and rural areas. The parameters of this study were based on the results of CPPS’ qualitative study of national unity amongst young urban Malaysians in the Klang Valley, and the provisions of the Consensus Document arising from the 1st Young Malaysians’ Roundtable Discussion held in April 2007. Both rural and urban areas were covered, with quota controls on gender, age, ethnic group, strata and region as representative of the total Malaysian population.
Levy on companies with foregin workers is not solution
This is in response to the recent suggestion by the Selangor Menteri Besar, Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, whereby companies which hire foreign workers will be ‘taxed’ RM9 per worker per month.
The coalition of five youth organizations known as the National Youth Consultation Conference (or NYCC) comprising the Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall Youth Section (KLSCAH-Youth), Empower, National Young Lawyer’s Committee (NYLC), Youth For Change (Y4C) and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) would like to appeal to the new State Government and Federal Government to consider the following points:
