在美国，具政治属性的青年组织并不多见，但带宗教背景的青年社会服务团体却比比皆是。基督教青年会(YMCA)便是影响力较大的一个。
YMCA是一个以基督精神感召青年，提倡志愿服务社会的非赢利、非政府青年组织，但它十分注重对青年学生参政议政能力的培养。除个别州外，美国的４０多个州都有由YMCA赞助的“青年政府”（Youth In Government，简称YIG），让中学生来模拟政府运作，学习行使民主权利，锻炼领导才干，激发他们的公民责任感。
美国的州政府与联邦政府一样，设有行政、立法及司法三部门。“青年政府”同样也是三权鼎立。据在密苏里州“青年政府”任职的１２年级（相当于高三）华人学生徐夏叶介绍，９－１２年级的学生都可以报名参加“青年政府”的活动。类似于美国的民主党和共和党，学生们也分成两个党派，分别叫联合人民党和新党。他们先在各自的党内竞选――组织竞选班子，起草施政纲领，进行竞选辨论、投票，获胜者将代表本党和反对党角逐州长、议员等职位。
