Dear Friends,

Strategic Information and Research Development Centre and Youth for Change (Y4C) cordially invite you to a Public Lecture by the well-known public intellectual, Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram of the United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Details of the lecture are as follows:

Title: When will we ever learn? Has Malaysia learnt the correct lessons from past crises?

Date: Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Time: 7.30pm

Venue: Hotel Singgahsana, Persiaran Barat, off Jalan Sultan, 46760 Petaling Jaya (next to Taman Jaya LRT Station) Admission: FREE

The Topic The world is still struggling to emerge from the longest and deepest financial crisis in six decades. For every piece of optimistic news about recovery there are stories of setbacks and worsening downturns. Asia has been here before. A decade ago, the Asian financial crisis swept across the region. It not only prompted some rethinking of how to ‘manage’ financial crises but also stimulated some serious rethinking about the character of the development model in Asia. Lessons were learnt and new policy and institutional frameworks were put into place. But the severity of the current crisis begs a question: did politicians and policymakers really learn the right lessons from ten years ago? This is the burning question that is addressed in Jomo’s important public talk.

The Speaker Jomo is one of the world’s leading thinkers on questions of development — not just development economics but also the policy commitments and institutional frameworks for international cooperation that are necessary to deliver both reform and sustainability. From his position at the United Nations he is able to shape debates and influence their outcomes. At the same time, he remains profoundly committed to building longstanding solutions to the most pressing problems that face the world today – environmental degradation and climate change, financial disorder and continuing uneven development. Come and listen to him offer important reflections on what has gone wrong and what might be done to advance a progressive agenda. Feel free to circulate this invitation and notice to your colleagues and friends.

KUALA LUMPUR, 30th June 2009 – Malaysian youth in general seem to be well informed on current issues but they remain politically disconnected as found in a nationwide opinion poll released today.

The poll also found out that the youth of Malaysia feel that government decisions have a lot of impact in their daily lives but there is little that their votes can do to influence the government.

The opinion poll, National Youth Survey 2008, was conducted by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, with funding support from The Asia Foundation, to gauge youth perceptions of lifestyle, current issues, values, politics, and their own levels of civic and social involvement.

The poll was carried out between 13th November and 9th December 2008 and a total of 2,518 randomly selected Malaysian youth between the age of 20 and 35 years old were interviewed by telephone. Respondents were selected on the basis of random stratified sampling along the national population profile and specifically proportional to gender, ethnicity and state of residence.

This initiative of coordinated vigils in the region is organised by MARUAH (Singapore Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism).

Background

On 6 May 2009, John Yettaw swam across a lake and spent the night at Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s house. He was asked to leave but had refused to do so. Subsequently, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested on 13 May 2009 for violating the

restrictions of her house arrest. She now faces charges that could put her into jail for three to five years, just when her house arrest of nearly two decades was set to expire at the end of May 2009.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Prize (1991) laureate who has been placed under house arrest for nearly two decades. The house arrest was set to expire at the end of this month, May 2009, but recent new charges* against her seem designed to deliberately prolong her detention. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi does not deserve this. Her democratic party had won the 1990 Burmese general elections decisively, but they were not allowed to take office and she was placed under house arrest instead.

Many of us across South-East Asia admire her sacrifice, courage and persistence for peace. We will come together on her last day of detention to honour Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and press for her freedom. The 63-year-old has spent almost two decades under house arrest, much of it in isolation from friends and relatives.

Local organisers are Tenaganita, SUARAM, Youth 4 Change (Y4C) and the Civil Rights Committee of the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

Background:

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the democratically-held elections in 1990, has been under house arrest for almost two decades. On 18th May 2009, she was charged with breaching the terms of her house arrest by hosting an unauthorized visitor after an American man swam uninvited to her compound and refused to leave.

She has borne her trials with dignity. Yet they continue unabated. The world has honoured her with a Nobel Peace Prize and lobbied tirelessly for her freedom but there is a growing helplessness towards the situation as the Myanmar junta continues to keep her in detention without trial.

Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM)’s youth chapter will be collaborating with Youth for Change (Y4C), Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM), Gabungan Anti-Perang and Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) Youth section to conduct a forum of “Truce Traitor: Hamas or Israel?” this 21st January 2008 (Wednesday), 8.30pm at Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, with Malaysian youths and young professionals as the target audience. Unorthodox issues and viewpoints will be deliberated, such as whether:

1) Hamas creates the whole mess (and therefore the Palestinians should just blame themselves)

2) Protests by Muslims are much driven by rage rather than reason (and thus the championship of Palestinian cause is overrated because Muslims use it solely for their own political mileage, when they themselves never get rid of siege-mentality in blaming others for their own problems)

3) The call for boycotting American goods is cheap, since much of our lives depend on how we deal with the superpower and we are shooting at our own feet if we are to abandon their products and services.

The organizers will bring forth MR. Rajen, a human rights activist who will provide a historical backdrop to understanding the fundamental issues in relation to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Without an understanding of history, it is difficult to take the correct line to learn from Palestin-Israel war.

Ramadhan Fitri Ellias from Youth for Change who’s graduated from Universiti Malaya and holds Master Degree from UIA to speak on the issue from youth perspective. He’s formerly the President of Majlis Perwakilan Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya and Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam Unversiti Malaya.

The widely known Palestine-Israel conflict expert, Dr Hafidzi who is the Director of Palestine Center of Excellence (PACE) will uncover critical yet refreshing analyses and findings on the crisis amidst diverging public opinion on Hamas resistance to the Israeli occupation.

It is the joint ambition of JIM, Y4C, SUARAM, Gabungan Anti-Perang and KLSCAH Youth Section to encourage mutual exchanges of different viewpoints through meaningful dialogue that seek to give every young Malaysians awareness, hope and strength to make a difference by upholding universal values of peace and justice endeared by Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
