“Revisiting the History of Independent Struggle”
The country history of independent should not be monopoly by UMNO or the Barisan Nasional (BN). The contribution and the sacrificing of the independent fighters who are always been labeled as “leftist” by British colonial that time should be recognized.
The courage to recognize the facts of history and the fair consideration to all the independent fighters including the Dr. Burhanuddin Al-Helmy and Ahmad Boestamam through the Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM), Angkatan Pemuda Insaf (API), Angkatan Wanita Sedar (AWAS) etc must be emphasized.
These are the point of views from the panelists such as the Dr. Dzulkifli Ahmad (Head of PAS Research Centre), Rustam Sani (Former Deputy President of Malaysia People’s Party), Ronnie Liu (Central Committee of Democratic Action Party) and James Wong (Director of Strategic Analysis Malaysia). They were invited by the Youth for Change to discuss on “Revisiting the History of Independent Struggle”.
About 60 audiences from different background attended the forum which was held in the KL Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. Lee Khai Loon (Convener of Youth For Change) as the moderator of the forum.
The history of independent remains sensitive issue. The discussion and understanding of the history focus on the official perspective. The young generation is unable to approach to the alternative version of the history of independent in Malaysia. Y4C aims to initiate some discussions on the independent history.
The forum was the first attempt of the Y4C to gather some public opinion leaders and academicians to present the historical context of the independent. The responses were encouraging because the audiences were active and critical. The
panelists were very articulate and full of enthusiastic to explain their views to the audiences. The question and answer (Q&A) session was very active and interactive.
Y4C realize the history learning may be bored and lack of creative ways to conduct the lessons. Young people prefer to go for exposure and learn from the field trips. We will conduct more programs to learn the history of the Malaysia.
We are the history of the country!
Forum was held at 14 September 2006
