Exploring possibilities…Y4C Media Team Training

Youth for Change (Y4C) and Southeast Asia Centre for e-Media (SEACeM) had organized a 4-day long training workshop to students who are interested to become video journalists. We had managed to attract 15 students from USM, MMU, NEC and IIUM to participate in the training. The participants were selected through the interview process.

The participants were trained by Jeremiah Foo from Asia 247 and Sam Hui from the SEACeM on the video production workflow, video shooting, editing, creative thinking, scriptwriting, online video delivery methods and website building. The 4-day training were conducted in two weekends due to the participants schedule in their university.

In fact, the video journalism is popular nowadays. The recent incident of student fracas in UPM proved that video clip can bring a great impact in society. Online video is the prevailing trend among the internet users in Malaysia. It can be very effective in communicate stories or incidents on campus to the general public. Y4C and SEACeM work together to promote the video journalism to more students.

The participants were divided into 4 groups based on their respective campus. They were assigned to submit a 10 minutes video after a week. Some of them take up the campus election issues as their topic. Some are focusing on the security issues surround their campus. Through their practical shooting experience, the participants were trained to be more alert on the issues happened around and how to see a big picture on incident.

We aimed to promote the investigative and independent journalism through video broadcasting. The participants were encouraged to take initiatives in reporting news around them through video shooting, editing and processing.

Besides, the training also provides the students inside the campus a tool to express themselves. They can conduct the interview with the lecturers, students, administration and other related figure if something happened inside the campus. The training is not only the participants with the skills, but the teamwork building. The production of the video has to carry out through the close work between different individuals.

The feedback from the participants was very encouraging and positive. They are committed to go back to their respective campus and do practice on what they had learned. Every week, they will submit news clip to Y4C website and Asia247. It is going to be another alternative for us to reach out more young people to work for the future civil society.
