Why Campus Election?

On September 21, the public universities conducted their campus polls to elect the leadership of Student Representatives Council (SRC). The result showed the Pro-establishment students won control 16 universities. Only International Islam University Malaysia (IIUM) managed to buck the pro-government trend with pro-student fronts bagging 28 seats out of 32 seats.

Why Y4C concerns on the campus election? What can Y4C done for the sake of campus democracy and student autonomy?

As a youth organization that works to empower young people to participate actively and effectively in the building of multi-racial Malaysia, we hope university students can take up this event to express their views on the issues of campus and nation. We understand the rules and control from the authority very much repress the progressive and democratic student. There must be some alternative ways for young people to involve.

Therefore, Y4C hopes to increase the participation of young people in Malaysia particularly the university students through the trainings, advocacy and exposure programs. For instance, the Alternative Course on Ethnic Relationship, forums discussion and exposure trip to Singapore that organized by Y4C will encourage more young people to participate in the social changes.

At the same time, Y4C also set up a new born Media Team. This is another methodology for the young people to involve in the campus election through video journalism. The process of the election in different campus can be a interesting materials to report the incidents. We believe through the video journalism, we can expose more fraud and malpractice of the campus election.

In conclusion, Y4C is preparing to work more closely with the student organizations inside and outside the campus. We are looking forward to propose more creative, inspire strategy and ideas. In order to breakthrough the restriction of the campus authority, we have to reach out to more student grassroots. Moreover, the discussion and debate within the students has to be accelerated. Lets us shape together a campus democracy and student autonomy!
